Yoga at YogaMetta

Every class at YogaMetta is about practicing with gentleness and without judgement (toward oneself and toward all others), cultivating inner calm and strength, and integrating breath and movement.

Over time, as I’ve sought ways of communicating the aspects of yoga I find most meaningful, my teaching has evolved toward a practice that is slower-paced and simpler than it used to be, and instead embraces the deep heart of yoga as I understand it, aiming to make that deep yoga-heart available to all practitioners.

This approach is informed by three root practices:

  • Turning awareness inward as we feel our way into the sensations of a flow or a posture, responding to tiny internal cues and seeking an inner alignment, rather than chasing a theoretically optimal outer form;
  • Always fostering the free flow of the breath, in every posture, and valuing attunement, throughout all of the yoga practice, to the ever-present oscillation of the breath in the body;
  • Building an awareness of the constant play of opposing forces in the body, and finding a balance in every pose of contrasting effort and release, engagement and spaciousness, precision and gentleness.

Enacted in this way — fully inhabiting the difficulty and the beauty of each moment, embracing the aliveness and responsiveness of your body, your breath, and your mind — yoga becomes a powerful and gorgeous tool for physical and emotional wellness.

Group and Private Instruction

Yoga for Well-being

A comprehensive group yoga practice for all levels. Classes are a blend of gentle and vigorous movement, seated and standing poses and flows, guided meditation, and breath-work. Emphasis throughout is on thoughtful, healthful body alignment, and on the inner experience of poses, flows and breathwork.

Chair-supported Yoga

Yoga for anyone who sits in a chair, but especially designed for people who are less comfortable standing, balancing, or getting down on the floor.  This includes seniors, people with M.S., Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders, and larger-bodied practitioners. Offers guided relaxation, specific work with the breath, supported standing poses, and carefully-crafted movement for cultivating ease in the body and the mind.

Mindful Yoga

A deeply relaxing group practice, including gentle movement, YogaNidra-style meditation, prop-supported restorative poses, Yin-informed held poses, and intentional use of the breath as a tool for calming the body and the mind.

Individual yoga

One-on-one sessions can be used to meet a range of needs, including:

  • Addressing specific practice-challenges or areas of physical discomfort
  • Introducing beginners to yoga
  • Creating and maintaining a home yoga practice
  • Receiving private meditation instruction or individualized restorative practices to address anxiety, stress, grief, or trauma.

Payment

Most yoga classes are offered in pre-registered bundles of ten classes. Cost is $150.  When available, drop-in classes are offered for $15.

Why ten-class bundles, instead of drop-in yoga?

You are welcome to attend your first class as a single (pre-registered) drop-in, for $15.

If you’d like to drop in to a first class or sign up for a series, just let me know ahead and I’ll send you registration/payment information.

Many health plans offer reimbursement for yoga classes. YogaMetta qualifies as an Independent Fitness Studio under many plans; please check with your insurer for specifics. I am happy to provide documentation as needed.

Private yoga is offered by prearrangement. Cost is $150 for ninety minutes.

Please contact Joyce@YogaMetta.net  with any questions, for information about current and upcoming classes, or to discuss setting up a private session.

Payment accepted via cash or check.
