Metta

Metta is a Pali* word meaning loving-kindness, benevolence, deep warmth and positive regard. Metta, the cultivation of kindness toward all beings, provides the fundamental inspiration for the studio and all our practices, holding up the beautiful ideals of open-heartedness, non-judgmental acceptance of others, and gentle kindness (radical acceptance) toward self.

(*Pali: the language of the sacred texts of Theravada Buddhism, thought by modern scholars to have been the language spoken by the Buddha.)

Metta meditation  (loving-kindness meditation) is a structured form — a mantra, or concentration meditation — in which the meditator repeats four phrases that express wishes for happiness and well-being, first for oneself, and then for others, gradually extending the wish for well-being and happiness to all beings.

Here is one version:

May I be calm, and live with ease.
May I be safe, and free from fear.
May I be healthy, and strong.
May I be filled with lovingkindness.
